tour this week.
Legendary US
pop singer Bobby Soul is to start his first China tour this week.
The 66-year-old musician will give a solo act tonight at
the opening ceremony of Dalian International Fashion Festival in Dalian, Northeast China's Liaoning Province.
He will also deliver two ballroom live shows at the St
Regis Beijing from September 17-18.
On September 26, he will perform in Nantong,
in East China's Jiangsu
Province, at
"The Same Song Gala Show," a China Central Television programme
popular among Chinese viewers.
Bobby Soul is remembered as the youngest of the original
"Platters," the world-famous all-African-American band from the
1950s, the so-called "Golden Years of Pop Music."
Soul was the vocalist and is regarded as the heart and
soul of the group.
Soul sang alongside such big names of the pop music
world as Jackie Pickets, Chuck Berry, Frankie Lyman, the Teenagers, the
Drifters, Little Anthony, the Imperials, B.B.King, Mary Wells and Teddy
Pendergrass.
His rich and enchanting voice has proven to be as
enduring and timeless as his past musical successes with group members.
Every year, he sings about 40 Platters oldies at
theatres, clubs, ballrooms and charity shows around the world.
His classic interpretations of the good old songs like
"The Great Pretender," "Twilight Time," "Only
You," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "My Prayer,"
"The Magic Touch" and "Unchained Melody" often bring
the audience to its feet.
Soul also impresses the audiences with his interactive
performance mode as he likes to walk down the stage, shaking hands and
taking pictures, signing autographs and cracking jokes with fans.
"I am very happy to be here and want to get to know
about Chinese people and the wonderful Chinese culture," said Soul.
In his view, "a great song means so much to the
audience. For every listener, every song may have a personal story behind
it."
After his China performances, Soul will
tour other Southeast Asian countries.
When asked why he is so busy, Soul explained: "I
want the legend go on for the Platters."
His China
tour is co-organized by the Beijing Art Spot Entertainment Group and St
Regis Beijing.
